'Paddle for Life'

Newsflash

The 2011 Newquay Paddle for Life was a great success, a great big thank-you to all those that helped out and those that attended, paddled and donated... check back later this week for details. You can still donate by clicking here.

The original Paddle for Life started after lifeguards from Fistral Beach held a Joe Way memorial paddle to raise money for charity in 2008.  Joe is the inspirational little boy who touched people's lives around the country and beyond.  His story of hope and fighting against all the odds with a cheeky smile has made what could have been the worse of times the best of times.

Our aim is to raise awareness of Joe’s story and inspire people to raise money for their chosen charity, to promote the paddle as a community event for people of all abilities and to raise £100,000 for various charity’s.

2011 Paddle Makes A Splash

2011 Newquay Paddle For LifeThe fourth Newquay Joe Way Paddle for life was hailed another success after a great turn out.  This year’s event saw nearly 200 paddlers of all ages and abilities taking part in the 200m and 1km fun paddles to do their bit to raise money for some of the 20 charities now supported by the Joe Way Appeal.

This years' frontman Karl Fice-Thomson and team organized the heats whilst entertaining the crowds with the back-up of the Lusty Glaze lifeguards, current English surf champion Tom Butler and Nicholas Pendreich.

Tom Butler, who is an ambassador for the Paddle for Life, said; “We had a great set up with the numbered wrist bands, communication between the beach, sea and checking-in with Julia was spot on, Will from Lusty Glaze did a great job keeping us informed which enabled us to have another safe and fun event”.

Dishing Out The Cash

Cheque HandoverNewquay Mayor Andy Hannan along with his wife Barbara and the Joe Way appeals' Dean Woods carried out a whistle stop tour to hand over donations from last years Joe Way Paddle for life.

The trio started at Kingsley Village to hand over £150 to the League of Friends and £250 to the Air Ambulance which was a thank you to Atlantic FM for their support and was added to the local radio stations running total for their High Five Appeal which is raising money for the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

Celtic Storm are Sainsbury’s chosen charity so this was another boost through the supermarket helping Joe’s Paddle.

The next stop was at St Austell to meet the team from Tanya’s Courage who raise money to support teenagers with cancer after Tanya Billing lost her battle several years ago. Iris Billing, Tanya’s mum, accepted the cheque during another busy fundraiser for her late daughter’s charity.

The rest of the paddle money, which was given out by Joe’s Dad Matt Way, went to Cornwall Hospice Care, Precious Lives Appeal, Cornwall Blind Association, CLIC, Ronald McDonald House (Bristol), Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club and the Newquay Police Cadets.

Nike 6.0 Boardshort Bar

Nike 6.0The Nike 6.0 Boardshort Bar, which was opened in Newquay for the main part of the summer, has supported a Cornish fundraising appeal which was set up in memory of 4 year old Joe Way from Newquay.

The boardshort bar was open in the centre of Newquay and had been designed and fitted out by a local company. The pop up shop concept gave Nike the opportunity to promote their new surfing brand in the UK’s surf capital this summer.

The pop up shop meant that retail space that would have been empty during the main holiday weeks, was used and it gave a great place for holiday makers and locals to make their own board shorts and catch up with the latest from the Nike 6.0 global team riders.
